Big Up The 90s

Here’s some background as to how The Ultimate 90’s Tribute Party Band came to be!!!

How It All Began

BIG UP THE 90’s has been in existence as a working band since 1995!!

Dean and Justin got together in the early 90’s, with guitarist Rob James in a band called The Innocence, and in 1995 Mart joined them on drums.

But at this time things were, musically anyway, very different…..

The band, The Innocence, were actively writing and recording their own brand of hard rock music, releasing 2 demos, ”Rigmarole” and ”From A Great Height” before changing the name to h.y.p.a and releasing a further 2 recordings, ”Message From The Grey Room” and the eponymous ”h.y.p.a.” in 1999.

Whilst gigging around the country, the band found themselves occasionally supporting various ”tribute” bands.  Seeing the reaction that these groups recieved they decided to try their luck in the market as a means to fund further recording projects.

Ruling out the idea of a ”tribute” to one particular artist due to the restrictions this creates in song choice, the four hit on the idea of a tribute to a decade!  But which decade?  Well as they were all of a ”certain age” and remembering the era with fondess, the 80’s was the obvious choice.  So in late 1999 h.y.p.a. became Kick Up The 80’s!!

Starting off playing their first gig at Justin’s brother’s 21st birthday party, over their 12 years together so far they have played with the likes of ABC, GO WEST and LIMAHL, regularly selling out venues across the Midlands and beyond.

Whilst their 10th anniversary year was fast approaching the lads decided it was time to spread thier wings with a new challenge, so began to think of a project that would compliment and continue the success that kick up the 80’s had enjoyed.  The natural conclusion for this project to celebrate their 10th year, was to look 10 years on from the 80’s………………………………………..the 1990’s!

Living their wasted youth through the 90’s they had all experienced the decade first hand, and quickly put together a list of songs to include all of the stars of the era, from boy bands to brit pop via girl power, creating a set list to keep people dancing and singing all night.

With their debut live appearance at The Robin 2 in Bilston on New Year’s Eve 2008, the band has gone from strength to strength. In November 2010 Ant Green joined the band on guitar, having previously played in various local bands including Tranzam.

Proving a huge success, it looks like Big Up The 90s will be “Living La Vida Loca” for many years to come!!

The rest, as they say, is HISTORY!
